A large-scale rescue and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing sailing vessels loaded with relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of 9 crew members, per a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger International Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified in recent months, with comments from different leaders emphasizing the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous comments, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to discover the sailboats and ensure the security of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
