Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
