Cameroon Opposition Figure to Face Legal Action Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon show outrage that Paul Biya has won an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he provoked "aggressive electoral rallies".

At least 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between police and military and demonstrators since the presidential election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth consecutive term.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he emerged victorious, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by security personnel on protesters have worried the world leaders, with the UN, AU and European Union urging restraint.

Official's Allegations

Earlier this week, Nji alleged the opposition figure of coordinating what he referred to as "unlawful" rallies resulting in the fatalities, and also condemned him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "accomplices involved in an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

The president, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October election with over half of the vote, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the government's decision to try him, but he had before declared that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

When results were announced, he claimed that armed men opened fire on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least two people.

Investigation Revealed

Recently, the government official revealed that an investigation would be initiated into violent incidents surrounding the announcement of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals were killed," he stated, without offering a specific number of protesters who have been killed in the incidents.

The minister noted that several officers of the law enforcement also sustained significant wounds.

Current Situation

While the interior minister insisted the situation across the country was now stable, protesters remain active in various areas of the nation, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on that day, and set fire to rubber on the thoroughfares.

Observers caution that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a governmental instability.
