Half a Million Honeybees Killed in Dutch Fire Incident.
A beekeeper from the Netherlands has expressed shock after his ten colonies were burned down in a park in the central city of Almere, causing the loss of an approximated 500,000 bees.
Harold Stringer mentioned that each hive housed a colony of 40-60,000 bees, and the idea that anyone could destroy them was devastating.
"It is deeply painful that my 10 hives have perished," he informed regional media.
Law enforcement in Almere, located to the northeast of Amsterdam, have requested observers after the arson attack on Tuesday evening in the city's picturesque Beatrixpark. They posted images of the fire on online platforms.
The Dutch government reports that more than half of the nation's 360 types of bee are at threat of dying out, as the number of bees decreases globally.
Mr Stringer said that police had told him an flammable substance had been employed to ignite the hives, which were sitting on wooden platforms in a forested area of the park.
Almost none of the bees made it through and he noted that he had doubt the perpetrator would be apprehended.
Another apiarist a local beekeeper told Dutch radio that she had three bee colonies and wanted to give him one of them.
For Mr Stringer, who cared for the bees for about nine years, the fire means starting a new colony in the area from the beginning.
But he affirms he will continue his efforts.
