Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
