New Year Partygoers Told to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, making additional clothing vital, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Alerts Activated
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this meant the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
