Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration said the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president supported a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the only topic that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
