The Japanese Economy Shrinks while Overseas Sales Suffer by American Trade Duties

The Japanese economic system has shown a contraction for the initial time in a year and a half, largely driven by weakening overseas shipments due to newly imposed US trade duties.

G7 Growth Standings

The Japanese economy stands as the initial G7 nation to report an GDP decline in the previous three-month period.

As the United States yet to publish its GDP figures for Q3 2025, the present G7 economic leaderboard display:

  • France: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
  • UK: 0.1 percent
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italian economy: 0%
  • Japanese economy: -0.4%

Travel Shares Slump during Political Dispute with Beijing

Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is facing an intensifying political dispute with China regarding Taiwan.

Shares in Japan's tourism and retail businesses have fallen noticeably after China advised its citizens to avoid visiting to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities escalated a political dispute that was triggered by remarks from Japan's recently appointed PM about the possibility of deploying forces in the case of a hypothetical Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The situation led to a wave of sell-offs across Japanese tourism-related stocks.

  • Oriental Land stock dropped by 5.7%
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
  • The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent

"The ongoing tension over Taiwan and China's advisory discouraging visits to Japan introduces near-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, luxury retail, and hospitality particularly at risk."

Economic Contraction Breakdown

Japan's gross domestic product fell by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' exports were hit by tariffs levied by the US this year.

Overseas shipments were a major factor of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.

Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15% when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.

Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.

"Japan's economy was solid in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that growth is paused for now.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."

The US administration has recently recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, lowering duties on imported food products including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about rising costs.
