The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
