Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
