Powerful winter gusts brought walls down onto flimsy tents housing Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous situation that persist after more than 24 months of intense bombardment and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a truce has been in effect from October, humanitarian organizations state that residents broadly lack the adequate shelter necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, said on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience loss of life in all its forms," said a family member following the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than five additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on that day started clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the war. Aid groups say not enough building supplies are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports over 440 individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are considered generally reliable by UN agencies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and 40 girls – had been killed after the truce started because of military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where enough details had been gathered to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring lack of assistance and a lack of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly required during the winter months. This marks the third winter since the conflict involving Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when militants attacked Israeli territory and killed around twelve hundred individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
